SICILY: TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS OF SAINT VITUS TO MAZARA DEL VALLO

Mazara del Vallo, June 14, 2026 – The solemn translation of the relics of Saint Vitus the Martyr, Patron Saint of the city, took place at the Cathedral Basilica of San Vito.

The solemn liturgy was presided over by the Most Reverend Excellency Monsignor Angelo Giurdanella, Bishop of Mazara del Vallo and Ecclesiastical Knight Grand Cross of Grace, and concelebrated by the Most Reverend Excellency Monsignor Domenico Mogavero, Bishop Emeritus of Mazara del Vallo and Ecclesiastical Knight Grand Cross of Grace. Also present were the Representative for Mazara, the Very Reverend Parish Priest Father Franco Geraldo Caruso, Ecclesiastical Knight of Grace and Rector of the Church of San Vito a Mare, which is entrusted to the care of the Constantinian Order), the Very Reverend Parish Priest Father Daniele Donato, Ecclesiastical Knight of Grace and Vice Rector of the Church of San Vito a Mare, the Very Reverend Parish Priest Father Giancarlo Tumburello, Ecclesiastical Knight of Grace, and the Very Reverend Parish Priest Father Salvatore Pavia (Ecclesiastical Knight of Grace).

Numerous civil and military authorities attended the event, including the Mayor of Mazara del Vallo, Dr. Salvatore Quinci; the Mayor of Campobello di Mazara, Dr. Daniele Mangiaracina; the Mayor of Partanna, Dr. Francesco Li Vigni; and the Mayor of Petrosino, Dr. Giacomo Salvatore Anastasi.

The Very Reverend Father Edoardo Bonacasa also invited the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, headed by H.R.H. Prince Charles of Bourbon Two Sicilies, Duke of Castro. Among the Knights present were the Vice-Delegate of Sicily, the Noble Dr. Antonio di Janni, and the Knights Claudio Ragusa, Baldassare Cacioppo, Antonino Maria Patti, Giuseppe Lipari, and Fabrizio Santoro.

During his homily, the Bishop recalled the heroic virtues of Saint Vitus the Martyr. At the conclusion of the Holy Mass, the relics of Saint Vitus, Saint Modestus, and Saint Crescentia were carried in procession inside the Cathedral and translated to the altar dedicated to them for public veneration.

The Vice-Delegate conveyed to Monsignor Giurdanella the greetings of the Grand Prefect, H.R.H. Princess Beatrice of Bourbon Two Sicilies.
