Naples and Campania: Holy Mass for the centenary of the passing of Queen Maria Sofia

On the first centenary of the death of the last Queen of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Maria Sofia von Wittelsbach, on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the Campania Delegation remembered the courageous Sovereign with a Holy Mass. The event was attended by H.R.H. Princess Beatrice of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies, Grand Prefect, the Delegate for Campania, Marchioness Federica de Gregorio Cattaneo di Sant’Elia, and Dr. Aurelio Badolati, Vice-Delegate for Calabria.
The ceremony, officiated by Fr. Roberto Spataro SDB, of the Pontificia Academia Latinitatis, took place in the Palatine Chapel of the Royal Palace of Caserta, which was inaugurated by King Ferdinand IV 240 years ago, on Christmas Night in 1784.

The pieces masterfully performed on the organ by Maestro Carmen D’Onofrio accompanied the entrance of a large group of Constantinian Knights and Dames.
The Resonare Fibris choir, directed by Maestro Guglielmo De Maria, along with the talented soprano Mariachiara Vigoriti, performed the songs that accompanied the religious Service.
Monsignor Luigi Castiello, during the Homily, recalled the strong personality of the Sovereign, who long survived the loss of the Kingdom while remaining deeply attached to her adopted Homeland and to the people over whom she had briefly reigned alongside her husband.
After the Constantinian Knight’s prayer, read by Comm. Giulio del Vaglio, the Delegate for Campania took the floor to deliver the message from H.R.H. Prince Carlo of Bourbon Two Sicilies, Duke of Castro, Head of the Royal House and Grand Master.
Before the end of the Mass, Fr. Spataro addressed H.R.H. the Grand Prefect, paying tribute to her in her native language.
Among the numerous Knights present were also the Nob. Dr. Antonio Oliverio, representative for the city of Crotone; the Dame Simona Delfino, representative for the city of Alessandria; and Commendatore Lieut. Giuseppe D’Amico, Delegation secretary for Molise. After the Mass, the participants gathered at the Masseria Giosole in Capua for a convivial moment.
