It was in the spirit of this profound attachment to Sicily that the visit to Palermo by Prince Charles of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies, Duke of Castro, and the Royal Family began. They arrived in the city on Saturday, 26 September, for an intensive day of institutional meetings and charitable initiatives.
The first stop on this journey of solidarity took place in the grand reception hall of Villa Valguarnera di Niscemi, where Prince Charles officially presented Roberto Lagalla, Mayor of Palermo, with an automated external defibrillator (AED) intended to enhance public safety.

The donation was promoted by the Sicilian Delegation of the Constantinian Order as part of the national Heart-Protected Cities project, an initiative aimed at fostering a culture of prevention, with H.R.H. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for their commitment and for the important charitable and solidarity initiatives they promote in support of those most in need.”
Princess Camilla of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies emphasised the social value of the project and the deep emotional bond with the local community:
“Returning to Palermo means rediscovering an important part of our history and a human bond that remains profoundly alive. I am delighted to be here with my entire family, including our daughters, who represent the new generation and the continuity of this bond with Sicily. Maria Carolina, in addition to her title of Duchess of Calabria, also bears that of Duchess of Palermo, making our presence here even more meaningful and moving.
“The donation of defibrillators,” the Princess continued, “represents a tangible gesture of care for people’s lives and safety, particularly for young people who participate in sports. The most beautiful bond with a city is one that inspires us to do something for its future. The Mayor and I have laid the foundations for several projects that we hope to develop together in the coming months, with the hope that this visit will mark the beginning of an increasingly frequent presence in the region.”

The day’s charitable commitment then extended to two other important local institutions.
The Mission of Hope and Charity: The Dukes of Castro and the Duchess of Noto and Capri visited the community, taking a moment of deep reflection to honour its founder, Biagio Conte, who died on 12 January 2023, aged 59, after devoting his life to helping the homeless, migrants and vulnerable people.
Princess Camilla paid tribute to the missionary by laying a red rose on his grave. “Biagio Conte revealed the most authentic face of Palermo: one of welcome and care for the most disadvantaged. Our family has a particularly strong connection with him. As early as February 2018, my husband had provided practical support to the community by organising an extraordinary shipment of aid. Today, we wanted to renew this tangible support by donating 4,000 kilograms of pasta, convinced that solidarity must be expressed above all through concrete actions that reach those in need directly.”

Casa del Sorriso in Monreale: At the same time, H.R.H. Princess Maria Carolina, Duchess of Calabria and Palermo, visited the centre run by Father Francesco to personally deliver school supplies for the children supported by the organisation.
The Princess was welcomed with extraordinary enthusiasm by the young residents, with whom she spent a considerable amount of time colouring and drawing in a joyful, festive atmosphere. To crown this special moment of sharing, Princess Maria Carolina was awarded the prestigious title of Benefactress Member, recognising a relationship of closeness and solidarity that Her Royal Highness has cultivated for years through repeated visits to the centre.
The packed institutional programme concluded in the heart of the Sicilian capital with a tour of the city’s principal architectural and historical treasures.
A particularly meaningful stop featured H.R.H. Princess Maria Chiara, Duchess of Noto and Capri. Driven by her deep love of nature and botany, the Princess wished to visit Palermo’s renowned Botanical Garden, where she paused with particular emotion at the historic Maria Carolina Greenhouse, also known as the Winter Garden.
This magnificent iron-and-glass structure, considered one of the finest in Europe, takes its name from Queen Maria Carolina of Bourbon, who, in the eighteenth century, commissioned its original construction as a gift to the institution.
The Royal Family then completed its artistic and cultural tour of the historic city centre with visits to the Quattro Canti, Piazza Pretoria and Villa Giulia.
Through these charitable and cultural initiatives, the Royal Family and the Constantinian Order reaffirm their profound and unbreakable bond with Sicily, bringing together historical memory and tangible acts of social solidarity.

An unbreakable bond with the island, rooted in history yet continually nurtured by deep personal affection and a tangible commitment to serving the community.
