On the occasion of the 164th Anniversary of the end of the Siege of Gaeta of 1860\u20131861, which marked the downfall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Constantinian Order of Saint George desired to continue commemorating the heroic defense, following the path paved since 1991. During this defense, in the presence of Their Majesties King Francis II and Queen Maria Sofia of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies, numerous soldiers and citizens valiantly sacrificed their lives within the ancient walls of the &#8220;Most Faithful&#8221; City, driven by unconditional loyalty and love for their Homeland.<br\/><br\/> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, this year&#8217;s program was organized through a collaboration between the Delegation of Rome and Lazio and the Delegation of Naples and Campania. It saw the attendance of numerous Knights and Dames arriving from Lazio, Campania, Molise, and Basilicata.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Order was represented by the Secretary General, His Excellency Don Paolo Costantino Borghese, Prince of Nettuno; the Delegate of Rome and Lazio, Marquis Giuseppe Ferrajoli di Filacciano; the Delegate of Naples and Campania, Marchioness Federica de Gregorio Cattaneo of the Princes of Sant\u2019Elia; the Delegate of Molise, Don Ettore d&#8217;Alessandro, Duke of Pescolanciano; the Delegate of Basilicata, Noble Dr. Massimo Calenda; the Vicar for the Lazio Provinces, Noble Prof. Attorney Franco Ciufo; and the Representative of the Order for the City of Gaeta, Attorney Salvatore Scafetta.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday 15th, Prince Borghese and Marquis Ferrajoli met with the Mayor of Gaeta, Dr. Cristian Leccese. Together, they visited part of the city&#8217;s Aragonese Castle\u2014originally the Royal Palace of King Alfonso V of Aragon and his Court\u2014which currently houses the Nautical School of the Guardia di Finanza, spending time in the interesting museum area curated by the military corps. Following this, they visited the atrium of the Royal Palace, where King Ferdinand II of Bourbon and the Royal Family lived during the final years of his life. They also visited the Golden Chapel of the Sanctuary of the SS. Annunziata, the favorite place of prayer of Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1848 when he moved to Gaeta with the entire College of Cardinals, and where he was inspired with the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. At the end of the visit, they were received by the Archbishop of Gaeta, His Most Reverend Excellency Monsignor Luigi Vari, at the Archbishop&#8217;s Palace. In the evening, a dinner was held at the Grand Hotel Villa Irlanda, attended by the Mayor of Gaeta and the representatives of the Order who had traveled to the city.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday 16th, at 10:00 AM, at the Sanctuary of the SS. Trinit\u00e0 at Montagna Spaccata, Knights and Dames were welcomed by the Rector, the Most Reverend Father Daniele Belussi of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions. Before the celebration of Holy Mass, His Most Reverend Excellency the Archbishop of Gaeta, Monsignor Luigi Vari, was invested with the Grand Cross of Ecclesiastical Grace of the Order by the Secretary General of the Order, representing His Royal Highness the Grand Master. The Holy Mass in memory of the Fallen of 1860-61 and Their Majesties King Francis II and Queen Maria Sofia of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies was presided over by His Excellency the Archbishop, concelebrated by the Rector of the Sanctuary and the Secretary of the Archbishop, Father Alessio Tomao, and assisted by the Vicar Prior of Rome and Lazio, Father Ettore Capra. The Vicar for the Lazio Provinces, Prof. Ciufo, coordinated the Knights and Dames, who participated in the Holy Mass wearing the mantle of the Order. Inside the church, the banners of the Constantinian Order and the National Association of Former Students of the Nunziatella Military Academy were present on both sides of the Altar.<br\/>     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the service, after a brief visit and prayer at the Chapel of the Crucifix\u2014built in the 14th century within the fissures of the Montagna Spaccata, which split during the earthquake that struck Gaeta at the exact moment of the Death of Our Lord Jesus Cristo\u2014the participants, guided by the Rector of the Sanctuary, climbed to the top of the cliff where the Transylvania Battery once stood, which tragically exploded on February 13, 1861. In the evocative square overlooking the entire Gulf of Gaeta, following brief commemorative speeches by Prince Borghese, the Vice President of the Lazio Section of the National Association of Former Students of Nunziatella, Dr. Pasquale Viora, Father Belussi, Attorney Scafetta, and, in conclusion, the Mayor of Gaeta, a moving flag-raising ceremony took place. This was coordinated by the Historical Reenactment Association &#8220;1st King&#8217;s Regiment&#8221;, whose members wore historical uniforms and saluted the flag with blank shots. This was followed by the casting of a floral wreath into the sea for the Fallen of the Siege, offered by the National Association of Former Students of Nunziatella, with the participation of President Emeritus Dr. Giuseppe Catenacci. At the end, the Knights and Dames, together with the large public in attendance, gathered on the enchanting square at the top of the cliff, greeting each other fraternally.      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the ceremony, the representatives of the Order who traveled to Gaeta, together with the Mayor, were received for lunch by Commendatore President Vincenzo Zottola at the Aeneas\u2019 Landing Resort.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire day, full of light and emotion, unfolded in a spirit of harmony, which helped unite the Knights and Dames even further in this first experiment of fraternal and communal collaboration between the Delegations of our Order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GAETA, February 15 and 16, 2025 &#8211; On the occasion of the 164th Anniversary of the end of the Siege of Gaeta of 1860\u20131861, which marked the downfall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Constantinian Order of Saint George desired to continue commemorating the heroic defense, following the path paved since 1991.
