The initiative, organized with the patronage of local and regional institutions and with the participation of the Delegations of Rome and Lazio, Campania, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Molise, Puglia, and Sicily, represented an important moment of historical remembrance, reflection and spiritual recollection.

The program began on Saturday, February 14th, with the official welcome from the Mayor of Gaeta, Dott. Cristian Leccese, to the Delegates of the Delegations of the former Kingdom and to the public at the Diocesan Museum. There, the participants had the opportunity to admire the Banner of the Battle of Lepanto and the historical artifacts of the Duchy of Gaeta, guided by the Museum’s Director, Don Gennaro Petruccelli.

The first day concluded with a conference held in the Conference Hall of Palazzo De Vio, opened with institutional greetings and followed by a lectio magistralis delivered by Prof. Roberto de Mattei on the topic “Francis II and the End of a Kingdom.”

On Sunday, February 15th, the most solemn moment of the celebrations took place with the Holy Mass at the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity at the Montagna Spaccata, presided over by H.E. the Most Rev. Mons. Luigi Vari, Archbishop of Gaeta and Ecclesiastical Knight Grand Cross of Grace. The Mass was offered in suffrage for the fallen of the Siege of Gaeta (1860–61) and for the last Sovereigns of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Francis II of the Two Sicilies and Maria Sofia.

Afterwards, the Rector of the Sanctuary, Father Daniele Belussi, accompanied the participants to the summit of the cliff of the Montagna Spaccata, at the site where the Transylvania Battery once stood and exploded on February 13th, 1861. The commemorative ceremony included institutional addresses, the casting of a wreath into the sea in honor of the Fallen, the raising of the flag with historical reenactors in period uniforms, and salutes fired with blank ammunition, performed by the “1st King’s Regiment.”

The celebrations were attended by numerous civil, military, and religious authorities, as well as representatives of the Order from various Italian regions, together with members of the local institutions and the associative community. Among the official addresses were those delivered by the Mayor of Gaeta and Egidio D’Addio, President of the Lazio Section of the National Association of Former Nunziatella Students.

The initiative reinforced the historical, cultural, and identity-related significance of the memory of the Siege of Gaeta, a symbol of the end of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The substantial participation of the local community highlighted the deep connection of the territory with its history and its commitment to the preservation of collective memory.

Princess Beatrice of Bourbon Two Sicilies and Marchesa Federica de Gregorio Cattaneo, Delegate for Naples and Campania of the Constantinian Order, took part in the events scheduled at the “Nunziatella” Military School, a symbolic place of the history and the identity of Naples and Italy.
During the visit, the Princess announced, in agreement with the 83rd Commander of the School, Colonel Alberto Valent, the increase in the scholarship fund named after her, established in 2006 through the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, reaffirming a concrete and personal commitment to supporting the Nunziatella students.

“I am very happy to be here today at the Nunziatella, together with my beloved Aunt Beatrice. Walking through these places brings to life a history that belongs not only to my family, but also to entire generations of young people who learned the value of service and sacrifice here,” said the Princess. “It is impossible not to think of the emotion felt by my ancestor, King Ferdinand IV, when this School was founded. It still represents a bastion of values ​​and education, capable of speaking to young people about the present and the future.”

CASERTA – The international exhibition “Queens: Weaves of Culture and Diplomacy between Naples and Europe” opened on December 19th at the Royal Palace of Caserta, and will run until April 20th, 2026. The exhibition pays homage to the sovereigns who, over the centuries, have contributed to the political, cultural, and diplomatic development of the Kingdom of Naples, forging relationships with the principal European courts.

The inaugural event was attended by H.R.H. Prince Carlo of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, accompanied by his wife, Princess Camilla, and by his daughters, Princesses Maria Carolina and Maria Chiara.
The Royal Family also took a leading role by lending several works that belonged to their ancestors and are currently their property, exhibited to the public for the first time in a context of strong symbolic and historical value.

“Returning to the Royal Palace of Caserta means, for me, returning to the deepest roots of my family,” said Carlo of Bourbon. “This place was commissioned by King Carlo of Bourbon as a symbol of vision and future, and my great-grandfather, Prince Alfonso, Count of Caserta, was also born here. We didn’t hesitate for a moment to lend the works that belonged to our ancestors: doing so brings us great joy. This is a lesson I also carry into my work with the United Nations: to continue fighting for women’s rights, for their participation, and for inclusive and concrete leadership.”

To look to the present and future was finally Chiara of Bourbon, that has drawn attention to the role of the new generations: “This exhibition demonstrates that history is not something distant. Emancipation also comes from cultural participation and the presence of young people today, in symbolic places like the Royal Palace, where we can identify with ourselves and build new awareness. My generation has the task of making history accessible, understandable, and alive. It’s not about celebrating the past, but about engaging with it.”

The “Queens” exhibition is part of a broader program of valorisation to promote the Royal Palace of Caserta as a European cultural crossroads, confirming the dialogue between past and present and reaffirming the role of women—both yesterday and today—in building history.
